Project Description

Being an Au Pair in Austria

An Au Pair must be aged between 18 and 27 years old.

The Au Pair takes part in the host family’s normal household tasks. Mostly this means child care and light household duties. Work contents need to be agreed upon by the host family and the Au Pair.

Hosting an Au Pair consequently leads to higher living costs. An Au Pair is an additional adult living with you at home.

Board & Lodging

An Au Pair  is entitled to free board and lodging at your home during the complete stay. The Au Pair  is an additional family member living at your home. Thus you need to calculate additional expenditure for daily needs. The same also applies in case of illness and during the Au Pair  holidays.

Pocket Money

The pocket money of Au Pair  in Austria is officially considered to be a salary. Therefore, it is paid at the end of each month as a salary for 20 working hours per week. Au pairs receive up to 386.80 EUR (gross wage) in Austria. This applies to Au Pair  contracts signed after 1 January 2013.

Please note that this is the maximum Au Pair  income limit in Austria. By rounding this amount up, the so-called Geringfügigkeitsgrenze, the subsistence pay limit, will be exceeded and the AMS will not issue the Anzeigebestätigung (confirmation of notification). Contributions to the Austrian social insurance (according to the General Social Insurance Act; ASVG) shall be deducted from this amount.

The Au Pair  is entitled to paid holidays and continued payment in case of illness. Au pairs who stay a whole year with the host family are entitled to a 15-month pocket money (holiday: two-month allowances; Christmas: one-month allowance).

Working Hours

An Au Pair  normally works 20 hours per week.

Free Time

An Au Pair  receives at least one day off per week. Therefore, both your daily life and housekeeping obligations and the Au Pair’s needs are to be taken into consideration.

Your Au Pair  is entitled to 30 days vacation per year, which equals 5 weeks. Compensation for unused vacation time is based on the Urlaubsgesetz (vacation law).

Language course

As a host family in Austria, you will need to pay half of the language course fee of your Au Pair.
